I remember one day close to closing time, I was about to shut down shop for the day and go home for dinner when this young kid came in. As it turned out he had a big prom date for that night and his uncle had just given him a new stereo for his truck. He asked me how much I wanted to install it for him, I went through the installation estimate for him and gave him the price. His next question was, could he get it installed tonight before his big date? I told him I was closing for the night but he insisted, then pleaded with me, but I held firm and refused, telling him the shop was closing. Then without any prompting from me he said he would double the estimate amount if I could install it tonight, well that was it for me. I installed the unit that night and as far as I know his date was all he had hoped it would be, as for me, I made a pretty penny that night for a basically simple job involving only a couple of hours for me.

Then there was the time a man came to me from Cleveland with his Camero, with the common complaint, "My stereo sounds like crap, I don't understand it", he began. "It's the best stereo GM has to offer, the car is only a couple of years old," he continued. "Since then I've had my car to every place in and around town but no one could find the answer to my trouble, I don't know, it just sounds weak," he concluded. After assuring him I would find his trouble and correct it, we went outside to listened to his system. I had to agree with him, it just sounded like crap. After careful examination of his system I realized there was little or no bass when the balance was set to the center but plenty of bass when set to either the left or right sides. The first thing my twenty five years of knowledge and experience lead me to was, speaker phasing , well to make a long story short, as it turned out it was the speaker wires that were to blame not the stereo unit or speakers. It seems that his and many other Cameros were shipped from the factory with the rear speaker wires on one speaker connected 180 degrees out of phase, (backwards). Due to the physics of sound, wiring speakers in this configuration cancels bass frequencies. Since the rear speakers are usually the largest of the four in most cars this canceled out about 90% of the bass from his system. The fix was to swap, on only one rear speaker, the + and - leads.  Needless to say he thought I was the installation king. As it turned out, he was a member of a Camero Club. He must have informed them of the job I had done on his sound system because I had more then my share of Cameros that summer.

One night I was out at my favorite night spot when I ran into a recently satisfied customer of mine. He thanked me again for a nicely done job and proceeded to buy me a beer or two, a couple of his friends came in and one thing led to another and they found out I was a stereo installer. I found out one of them needed a stereo system installed in his van, so, after he bought me a couple more beers I agreed to have a look at it for him. I made a nice piece of change on that job too, if I remember correctly.  I can't tell you how many times things like this has happened to me.

Is it just me or have you also noticed lately how almost every kid has a kick-ass stereo system before they have tires or even brakes for their cars.
